Support Socktober at My Friend’s Place!

On average, My Friend’s Place serves 82 young people experiencing homelessness each day, and every young person is offered a new pair of socks and underwear on each visit.

For our youth, receiving a new pair of socks goes beyond making a fashion statement. In fact, new socks are key to supporting the health, wellness and hygiene of our youth. Being without clean socks, especially during the colder and wetter months, can lead to discomfort and foot ailments, especially when youth are travelling around the city primarily by foot and have extremely limited or no access to laundry facilities.

Help My Friend’s Place celebrate Socktober by contributing new socks, to ensure that we will have a steady supply for our youth in the coming months. Our goal is to collect 5,000 pairs this month and we need your help to make it happen!

New and packaged socks in adult sizes, both tall and short, are most needed. Socks may be dropped off at My Friend’s Place Monday – Thursday 9am to 5:30pm or Friday 8am to 5pm, at 5850 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028. Socks may also be ordered directly from our wishlist by clicking here! Help Provide Backpacks for Youth Experiencing Homelessness

Imagine carrying everything you own in just a backpack. For youth at My Friend’s Place, it’s not hard to imagine, because it’s part of their daily reality. For young people experiencing homelessness, the average backpack weighs 17 pounds and is carried for 12 hours each day, and lasts for approximately 1 month. On average, 27 young people at My Friend’s Place ask for a new backpack every single day. This Back to School season, you can help ease the daily strain of homelessness by providing new or gently used backpacks for our youth. Shop our Amazon wishlist to send backpacks directly to our door, or e-mail Daniel Lee, Development Associate, at [email protected] for information on how to host a backpack drive in your community.

Not an Amazon shopper? No problem! Backpacks can also be dropped of directly at My Friend’s Place, Monday through Thursday from 9 A.M.—5:30 P.M., and Friday from 8 A.M.—4:30 P.M., at 5850 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028. You can also make a $20 gift through our website, and specify that you would like your gift to be used to purchase backpacks.

Dog Days of Summer at My Friend’s Place

In addition to serving young people experiencing homelessness and their children, My Friend’s Place offers care and support for our young people’s animal companions as part of our low-barrier approach. The Animal Companion Program provides comprehensive care for the animal companions of our young people, most of whom are dogs, who often provide therapeutic relationships and emotional support to youth in our services.

Our program provides food, pet care supplies and education on animal companionship, ensuring that all dogs are well taken care of. We also work closely with veterinary care partners in the area to meet the medical needs of these animal companions, including from flea treatments, microchipping, vaccines and spay/neuter surgeries, while also covering the costs of all medical care with support from our partners at the Happy Hippie Foundation.

This Summer, the puppies of My Friend’s Place need your help. We’re currently accepting in-kind contributions of dry and wet dog food, leashes and harnesses, and Petco gift cards to help keep these furry friends happy, healthy and safe. Your gift will provide young people and their animal companions with necessary supplies to support the wellness of these beloved animal companions, which in turn supports the wellness of our young people.

Click here to shop our Animal Companion Program Amazon Wish List, or e-mail Daniel Lee at [email protected] to coordinate a drop-off or for information on hosting a drive on your community! Drop-off contributions are accepted Monday through Friday at 5850 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028 between 9 A.M. and 5 P.M.
